Skiing with Daddy

Brian should really be writing this blog tonight, but since he's not... I'm going to have a little fun!

Brian is a great dad. You already know this. He loves these two kids of ours... more than Chai Tea Lattes and the New York Times (his 'must have' morning combo), more than KU basketball and the Colorado Rockies (his loyal sports teams), more than Patagonia clothing and his smart phone (ooooh that was a close one!)... but more than skiing? Well, that was a tough call until this weekend - when his two loves collided.

Susan said...: I could never have pictured the current state of affairs at the Denver Murphys household as we all sat in a waiting room at Denver Children's Hospital on August 6, 2008 to hope Eden's transplant would be successful. What a time it has been since that night! We are so blessed to have all four of you to share our lives with.

What is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy?

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, is one of the four main types of cardiomyopathy. Characterized by the abnormal growth of muscle fibers on the heart muscle, HCM often results in a thickened septum and/or left and right ventricle. The thickening of the muscle can result in a resistance of blood flow both in and out of the heart’s chambers. When this occurs, the heart must work harder to pump blood throughout the body.

While perceived to be somewhat rare, HCM affects an estimated one in 500 people. It is the number one reason for heart transplants and the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in people under age 30. HCM may be best known for its role in cardiac arrest and subsequent death in some young professional athletes. The cause of HCM is largely unknown, however current research suggests it is genetic in origin.
